On Becoming a Master

Welcome to all the new members of the World Mind Society in the past week.  Please read the last Newsletter in our Library at http://www.eoni.com/~visionquest to fully understand this current issue.

The following is a conclusion to the last Newsletter.  It has been one discussion among many held on the New Civilization Network.  NCN has generously provided us and others, with the means to discuss in open forum all of the pertinent issues of modern life.  To participate, you can go directly to our web page there at http://www.newciv.org/wms/.  In either case, entrance can only be had by NCN members.  Look for the “Raising the World Mind” work group there, once you’ve become an NCN member.

Sandi writes;

Dear Matthew,

There are two points you made that I would like to discuss, before going further to focus on becoming a [spiritual] Master.

The first thing you wrote was:
“Of all the proposed solutions for the modern world’s ills,  a shift of intent worldwide is the surest path for human transformation.  Not only is the Intent of the Master the Mastery of intent, but also, the intent of any person is the key consideration in their lives in the accomplishment of anything.”

I do see the importance and the truth of this statement.   What I’ve observed within myself is that my intention is not the foremost thing on my mind moment to moment.  In fact, I have to admit that my intentions are sometimes not of very high quality, and therefore I would rather not look at them.  The intentions I’ve seen actually do nothing more than keep my ego in place, and cover up the true feelings I have inside myself.  I clearly see why this is a planet of beings that are very far from being actual Masters.  They can come up with any excuse they like such as:  “We are only human”.  “It is heresy to say that you can be a Master”.  “Being a Master is for a very few, special, high Beings.”  It is clear that anyone could be a Master if that is what they would make of themselves.  But the fact of the matter is, that we are a species of selfish, self important people, that don’t really care about anything except our own safety and comforts.  This is difficult to admit, but it is the truth.  Until one can put their egos and feelings aside and make truth the highest priority in life, then Mastery is not within reach.  While we value only our personal feelings, or how we can keeps our ego [public image] intact, then true intentions will never be looked at, never mind purified or uplifted.  This is why people don’t listen or strive for such things, because to look honestly at their intentions would be killing their egos, and admitting to the lies they live [through society]

The second point I want to discuss is: “Yes, our feelings and intentions have inertia, which is by the way, what karma is all about.”

Therefore, in order to truly break through the karma we have incurred, be it personal or planetary, one first must recognize the inertia behind it, and the force that is keeping  it going in the direction it is.  Until one has clarity this is not seen. People are just blindly going in the direction of their demise.   Again, it is the dishonesty of the intentions behind  keeping things “as they are“,  that maintains this [society’s] inertia going the direction that it is.  At this point, the only remedy I see is honesty…and what I also see is that it is highly unlikely to be adopted.

With that said, let’s talk specifically about the steps you pointed out….

“1)  Principle…to project a given state, (of consciousness) one must first be in that state.  If we wish to project love or high feelings of any kind, [to others] then we must first cultivate them in ourselves, so that we have something of great value to give.”

The wall I hit with this is that no one that I have met, (so far in my life) can truly  project such feelings, because they are just not honest about what they feel, or what they do or say.  There are “selfish” intentions or motives behind their actions and words. I know many will say I am being cynical or negative, but I am just being honest.  I know there are some people who truly want to stop war or change the world, but when push comes to shove, just how much are these people really doing to make any real world changes?  I never hear people asking “why” in most situations.  To ask why would be getting to the cause of an issue or situation, and that requires honesty, clarity and a true desire to make a real change…not just lip service.

Therefore, if one wants to project high feelings or love into the world, you must become that which is projected.  But if no one, (at least none that I know of) is truly looking within themselves with crystal clarity, or honestly purifying their intent, dares accept the truth in all situations etc, then how can anyone expect to project high feeling into the world at large, with a lasting effect?  If one day you are meditating and manifest these high feelings of love out to the world, but the rest of the week you are at work putting your focus only into money making, keeping the boss happy, “fitting in” with co workers, and enhancing your career, then how can anyone expect to make a real change in the world?  One must stay focused on what is important, not what society tells them is important (a new car, credit cards).  I just do not see anything changing, because the focus, intention and motives of truth are just not valued in this world.  What is being projected out on a daily basis is not love, but a worship of keeping egos in place and to the one thing that will give a person “status and respect“….money.

How many out there are willing to be totally honest and live for the highest ideals of truth, no matter what the rest of the world says?

I don’t think many, but it is refreshing and highly appreciated to talk of what is truly important, and not just idle chit chat that gets you nowhere.  I see with more clarity the importance of the Chakra Meditation, [see the Perpetual Raising series in the Library at http://www.eoni.com/~visionquest] because one must work through the inertia in each part of their body, [changing fear to love and clarity] before any true changes can occur.  To do this one must also look at the intentions behind all the feelings in the body.  This is a full time job so to speak, one that must take top priority, for all others pale in comparison.

Matthew replies;

Dear Sandi,

Your honesty about important issues helps this discussion get right to the heart of the modern condition.  Ego-driven intent is truly the prime source for modern ills of all kinds.  Through it nations do battle for the sake of self interest alone.  So too do neighbors and families find discord of all kinds, dissatisfaction and inner strife, through intent that is not based on more progressive ends.  In the modern world we find that humanity has traded the reality of natural laws and the natural world, for images which serve only vanity, and aligning with the status quo.  If we are to achieve peace and real satisfaction from life as individuals, and as a species, then it is our deepest need to remain aware of what intentions we are using moment to moment.  We need to change the existing “consumer intentions” which are in place now.  Yet this is only a first step.  The next step is to actually improve our intent in the direction of universal causes, [such as spiritual self realization] rather than the selfish concerns of consumerism.

As I mentioned before, intent relates to motive…in fact, it is the very source of motive.  When we speak of finding love, gaining clarity or realizing world peace, we must first seriously ask what motivates humanity at present to lack love, clarity and peace.  We lack these things because we lack the right intent, or motive, to embrace such qualities in our daily lives.  Wrong intent may be defined as selfish motives which seek only the benefit of self, at the cost of all else.  Right intent is that which works for the cause of universal human benefit, in love, clarity and wise understanding, as well as the further evolution of this living planet.

Through an internal study of intent we learn more about ourselves, than with any psychological analysis or philosophical focus.  Intent is our very basis as centers of consciousness, so when we are not focused upon our intent, we’re truly not “centered in ourselves“.  Our motives then become obscured to the conscious mind, yet intent continues on every moment in us, regardless of whether it is acknowledged.  In meditation it is not difficult to first focus on the feelings in the body or observe thoughts in the mind.  Through these we can see what our intent is doing, just like wind can be observed when it moves grass and leaves.  Later in our practice of self realization, we need only look within at any time to directly see our intent in action.  Likewise we come to see others in terms of their intent, rather than just what is socially projected, giving deep insights into our relationships.  The more we become aware of intent from which all thoughts and feelings constantly arise, the more we can then really change for the sake of very significant self improvement.  .

You mentioned that intent is not something you keep foremost in mind on a daily basis.  This is a result of modern cultural influences.  They have trained us to stay in our thoughts, rather than the maker of thoughts.  Running our lives through our created thought patterns rather than through the creator of thought,   [intent and awareness] could be likened  to driving a car from the back seat.

Consciousness is an alive and active force within all of nature. But we have forgotten this by focusing elsewhere.  Through social training in a materialistic society, humanity’s focus has been centered on two major things…how we look and what we’re doing in the physical world. Both of these focuses relate to creating the kind of life mandated by social expectations, but do not and cannot reflect, how we really are as spiritual beings.  The fact is, we have a REAL SELF that exists independently of what we do, and which cannot be defined by daily activities.  Nor can it be defined by our thoughts, which are also something we do.  It can only be defined in terms of our intent, (source of motives) awareness, (that which focuses, as distinguished from that which is focused upon) and energy, (our vitality level, chi).  These three form the true self, or soul, also known as CONSCIOUNESS.

Our difficulty as a culture is that we’ve been confused by the images and thoughts of our own making.  The social “norms” seen on television and in advertising of all kinds are a perfect example.  We imagine that this is how things inherently are, rather than realizing this is only one way to make them.  Life does not have to be led as we’ve been taught to believe.  We can create an entirely new course for ourselves and this society by changing our intent in life.  To do this however, it is best to focus upon intent itself, and to a lesser extent, awareness itself, rather than just thoughts.   This is a primary purpose for meditation.  See the shifts of the intent within.  Realize that behind every decision and action we take, intent is fully responsible.  See that every single thought and feeling within springs from an intent.  To see ourselves as awareness and intent, rather than memorized thoughts, social roles or those thoughts provided by the mass media, is to gain great self realization.  From self realization comes greater mastery, and even Mastery itself.

What you mentioned about karma is exactly correct. Karma is really just inertia set in motion, and compounded over time through our daily focus. Karma is the natural law of cause and effect.  Our intent is the daily cause we set up in life, whose effect is then reflected back to us on a compounding basis.  This compounding or cumulative effect of the intentions we use in life, in other words, creates inertia. Once set in motion, the natural law of inertia will tend to maintain our lives according to how we’ve lived in the past.  Addictions are a perfect example of inertia. When addictions of any kind are established they are hard to break, and even more so if the thing addicted to has been a long term dependency.  The longer the dependency the greater the inertia, and the harder it tends to be to break.  But knowledge of intent can offset any inertia, or karma, in our lives.  Once we realize to deeper and deeper levels that intent is the true foundation of our quality of life and every decision made, then we can change our intent for the sake of great self evolution.  The same can be done on a planetary scale, when enough people uplift the social intentions being used.  Society is actually just a consensus of intent.  The world functions as it does largely because this is how we have intended it to be.  By the same token we can raise our intentions to a spiritual focus in life, and create an entirely different consensus.  This is in fact what we MUST do.

You’re right about people going blindly through the prescribed motions of daily living according to what is expected.  This again is a lack of focus upon their awareness and intent, one that literally cures blindness of all kinds.  Our blindness is largely due to the fact that society itself has much collective inertia, (karma) in destructive directions, due to our misuse of collective intent.  That is why it is important for each of us to dis-associate entirely with the beliefs and values of society, because there is no good reason for us to take on its destructive  karma.

We must question everything about the idea of “success” in the modern world, and discard what is not useful.  True success is not based upon financial status for instance, it is based upon our level of self realization as centers of consciousness.  It is also based upon the quality of intent that we use, especially in the case of leading a spiritual, rather than a materialistic life focus. Honesty, as you mentioned, is critical in such transformation.  Honesty is merely the willingness to accept the truth about ourselves and the world.  It literally makes progressive change possible.

With progressive intent, there is very little that humanity cannot accomplish.  Through it we will find world peace and personal fulfillment alike.  On this common root will grow all good and useful things, so let us each cultivate a rapport with intent every moment, to truly grow and flourish.

This is the key to self and planetary evolution.
